The Brayton House is a grand twenty-room Georgian Revival home.  It is located in the Grand Rapids' Heritage Hill District, a unique residential area of over 1,500 historic properties listed in the National Historic Register.

A quiet and secluded man, James P. Brayton built his home in 1889.  In addition to buying and selling lumber for himself, his signature was accepted as the last word regarding the value of standing lumber.

Between 1920-1935, the home was owned by Stewart Foot, President of Imperial Furniture Company, which at one time was the largest manufacture of quality tables in America.

James McInerny, President of McInerny Spring and Wire Company purchased the home in 1935.  For the next 10 years, the Mr. McInerny and his family occupied the home.  During their ownership, the kitchen and bathrooms were remodeled and wallpapers were put up.  They also adjusted the size of the ballroom on the third floor in order to add three extra bedrooms.  This is about the same time the Carriage House was made into living quarters.

In 1945, Mr. McInerny gave the house to the Catholic Diocese.  It was used as a residence for priests until in 1970 it was purchased by Mr. Walter Kehres, Director of Waldon Village, an alternative high school.

In September 1971, the property was bought by Gene and Phyllis Ball.  Mr. Ball passed away in 1976.  Mrs. Ball continues to reside in the home.
